Background
The Baltimore Rhythm Festival (BRF) builds upon the legacy of the Baltimore International Rhythm and Drumming Society (BIRDS), which hosted an annual Rhythm Festival from 1995 to 2014. The festival was a vibrant celebration of rhythm, bringing together communities through workshops, performances, an open-air market, and an all-day drum circle. It attracted renowned musicians and dancers, including Glen Velez, Ubaka Hill, and the legendary Babatunde Olatunje. In 2014, Menes Yahudah and Rory Turner revived the festival, continuing its mission to connect people through the power of rhythm. The BRF now stands as a cultural hub in Baltimore, embracing its role in uniting diverse communities through the universal language of rhythm.
Concept
I envisioned communications that would not only reflect the festival’s diversity but also capture its vibrant, immersive atmosphere. The design concept fused collage-style imagery with natural, dynamic elements—such as butterflies, dragonflies, sun, and flowers—blending these with African textile patterns to celebrate the festival’s rich cultural tapestry. The festival's intimate, green oasis setting inspired me to create materials that felt both welcoming and alive, inviting people from all corners of the world to connect through music. With every design, I aimed to bring the energy, unity, and colorful spirit of the festival to life, making each piece as compelling and lively as the event itself.
Output
I designed a variety of digital and print materials including billboards, posters, flyers, banners, signs and t-shirts. Social media posts were created to spotlight artists, vendors, volunteers, performances, and the festival schedule. Each piece was crafted to engage the community and celebrate the festival's lively spirit.
